A Day in the Life as a Meals on Wheels Driver:

As a Meals on Wheels Driver, you’ll deliver daily meals and wellness checks to the homes of senior citizens and eligible adults in a friendly and timely manner. Your day will involve:

  • Picking up meals from the program site and if requested, assisting in meal packing.
  • Delivering meals courteously and in a timely manner.
  • Reporting safety, environmental or social service needs of the participants to supervisor while completing accurate timesheets and odometer sheets.
  • Cleaning and maintaining food delivery equipment as required and keeping a sanitary environment in vehicle.
  • Maintaining accurate route slips and communicating all changes to supervisor, verbally and in writing.
  • Distributing and collecting donation envelopes for the program weekly, unless otherwise directed. 
  • Accurately maintaining up-to-date meal counts.
  • Adheres to all policies and protocols outlined in the Meals on Wheels Handbook and trainings, especially as they apply to personal safety and body mechanics, client safety, and food safety.

Your role will directly contribute to a positive participant experience, providing them with the resources they need to thrive.

Qualifications to Be a Meals on Wheels Driver:

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalency credential 
  • Experience: Maintaining professional boundaries with clients. Maintaining confidentiality of clients and coworkers and internal business information. 
  • Skills: Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment; and attend team and staff meetings as scheduled. The ability to organize efficient route plans and work under time constraints of hot food delivery.
  • Characteristics: Being punctual, dependable with courteous demeanor, and personable. 
  • Technical: Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Reliable sources of transportation needed to be used in fulfilling responsibilities of position. Maintaining minimal insurance coverage per CAPBM’s Personnel Policies & Procedures Handbook Insurance Requirements policy.
  • Physical: Ability to physically lift coolers containing meals weighing up to 50 pounds, climb stairs and wash coolers.

Successful completion of criminal record and driving record checks required.
