UNH Extension: Keeping Cool, Heat Management Strategies for Livestock

Each year, summers in New England seem to bring hotter and more prolonged periods of high temperatures. These conditions can place significant stress on livestock and challenge farm productivity. Join Extension at Prime Farm for an informative workshop focused on practical strategies to protect livestock from the impacts of extreme heat. 

During this on-farm session, participants will see firsthand how Prime Farm keeps their cattle cool using shade structures, strategically timed pasture moves, and consistent access to fresh water. Extension Livestock Field Specialist Katrina McKay will share additional management strategies for reducing heat stress, including considerations around feeding schedules and breed selection. We will review the early signs of heat stress in animals and discuss why early detection is essential to minimizing its effects. 

Prime Farm raises beef cattle using rotational grazing practices across several properties in the Sutton area.
