Watch one of six roundtable discussions at the 2021 NH Food System Statewide Gathering

One of six roundtable discussions featured at the NH Food Alliance's 2021 NH Food System Statewide Gathering, the "Respond and Adapt to Climate Change and Improve Food System Reliability and Resilience" roundtable presented how climate change is being addressed within the New England and New Hampshire food systems.

Facilitated by Chris Skoglund of the NH Department of Environmental Services and Jennifer Wilhelm of the NH Food Alliance, roundtable attendees heard presentations on national, regional, state, and sub-state regional levels of climate resiliency. Rob Werner, the New Hampshire State Director for the League of Conservation Voters, shared insights on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and other developments at the policy level. Ellen Kahler, the Executive Director of the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund, provided information about the NE Food System Planners Partnership. Skoglund shed light on the work of our Climate & Food Action Team and Edith Pucci Couchman, the Vice President of the NOFA-NH Board, shared how NOFA-NH is mitigating climate change and supporting climate resiliency at the organizational level.

Follow the presentations, roundtable attendees participated in a Q&A session that culminated in the following call to action: capture and replicate lessons learned from the emergency feeding operations that took place over the past year in response to COVID-18 and incorporate these lessons into New Hampshire’s state emergency management plan; work with NH’s state-level hazard mitigation office to plan for future food emergencies by exploring ways that local or regional food can be procured to help feed New Hampshire residents in need; explore what additional policies and levels of investment are needed to lead to more NH grown/caught/raised/produced food being available and being utilized to feed people during emergencies; identify the state personnel and other support organizations that need work together on this issue.
