New Hampshire Food Waste Generation Study is Now Available
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) recently published its New Hampshire Food Waste Generation Study. The study was conducted for NHDES by Resource Recycling Systems (RRS), with help from the Center for EcoTechnology and the New Hampshire Food Alliance. Funding for the study was provided by an EPA Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grant.
In 2023, the New Hampshire Legislature passed a food waste disposal ban that requires generators of one or more tons of food waste per week to divert it from landfill disposal or incineration if an alternative facility within 20 miles has capacity to accept the food waste. To successfully implement the ban, NHDES commissioned this study to identify entities that are potentially subject to the ban, better understand how food waste is currently managed in the State and determine what management capacity is needed to achieve full compliance with the ban.
