Local Food Purchase Assistance Impact Report: A Preliminary Assessment of the LFPA Program

National Farm to School Network

New research from Michigan State University's Center for Regional Food Systems and Tuskegee University, funded by USDA, assesses the impact of the Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) program. The report finds that over $365 million in LFPA funding supported purchases from more than 13,000 producers, moving food through 2,600+ vendors to reach over 1,800 distributing organizations. While USDA announced in March 2025 that the program won't be extended, existing agreements run through December 2026, and researchers say LFPA offers valuable lessons for future local food system initiatives.
