Dairy and Livestock Value-Added Program

The University of New Hampshire dairy and livestock specialists are looking for farmers interested in the following program: Improving dairy and livestock farm viability in New Hampshire and through cohort-led value-added education to build community and navigate competition between farms. Program Goals:This program is designed to assist current and prospective New Hampshire dairy and livestock value- added producers. UNH Extension is developing two cohorts to help you manage marketing, finances, product development, and regulations. Farmers will network and learn from other businesses and producers.

Farmer Expectations: Farmers will join one of two cohorts (Dairy Value-Added & Livestock Value-Added) & attend two in-state and five out-of-state cohort meetings.

Lunch and transportation will be provided.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Understand the necessary infrastructure for starting value-added production
  • Understand marketing strategies for new and expanding value-added enterprises
  • Calculate production costs and determine product pricing
  • Increase their knowledge regarding legal compliance and establish relationships with New Hampshire regulatory industries
  • Understand best animal husbandry practices
  • Understand how to use social media for marketing purposes
  • Gain access to business and production resources as your business grows
  • Develop a resource bank of risk management tools for value-added production
