About the Farm Bill

The Farm Bill is a comprehensive piece of legislation that authorizes most federal policies governing

food and agriculture programs. The Farm Bill is broken down into 12 titles - broad categories that each include different programs. Congress reauthorizes the Farm Bill about once every five years. This process allows legislators to review and change the programs included in the Farm Bill. The 2018 Farm Bill is set to expire on September 30, and Farm Bill negotiations have already started.

The Farm Bill is incredibly important - it is the largest food and agriculture bill debated in Congress and includes vital programs like nutrition assistance, crop insurance, credit access, conservation and environmental stewardship, and more.

NFFCs Farm Bill Platform

NFFC staff and members see the Farm Bill as a prime opportunity to fundamentally transform our food and farm system into one that supports family farmers over corporate profits, thriving rural communities, healthy ecosystems based on agroecology, and a more equitable system. The NFFC Farm Bill Platform reflects our shared commitment to small and mid-sized family farmers, and has been carefully crafted to accurately represent our members’ priorities and values.  Our “tagline” for the 2023 Farm Bill process is, “It's time for fair food and farm policies that put family farmers first!”
