Promote and expand food system literacy in New Hampshire

Recommendation Status: In Progress

Are you working on this recommendation? Let us know.

Recommendation: This can be effectively achieved by increasing the adoption of educational initiatives such as the NH Agriculture in the Classroom curriculum, the NH Harvest of the Month program, and the Indigenous NH Harvest program in both cafeterias and classrooms across the state.

Current work happening on this recommendation:

  • Vital Communities's online resource hub and 1-on-1 technical assistance opportunities (either ad hoc or accompanying mini-grant funding) help educators in identifying and implementing curricula that increase food system literacy, tailored to whatever age group is being instructed. Additionally, if local schools or libraries are interested in connecting and hosting the Climate Farmer Stories exhibit, they aim to be able to offer education on food systems and climate resilient farming practices that way as well. This work is ongoing, as they offer technical assistance year round and educators are able to visit our online resource hub at their own pace if they would like to gather lesson plan materials or ideas outside of a scheduled meeting with their staff.

Craving context? This recommendation is included in the Food System Literacy, Childhood and School-Age Children brief, part of the NH Food and Agriculture Strategic Plan.
